Ministries at Hope Hornby

HOPE WORLDWIDE

As a Hope Worldwide Team our commitment is drawn from the command of Jesus:

“Then Jesus came to them and said, ‘All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore, go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you.”  Matthew 28:18-19 (NIV)

The scope of our responsibilities encompasses anything related to our overseas workers. In terms of what we support, priority is given to ministries working with unreached people groups or in unreached areas. These unreached areas are where the indigenous community of believing Christians does not have adequate numbers and resources to evangelize their own people without outside assistance. With the ever-increasing numbers of unreached, we recognise the need for self-sustaining ministries, succession planning and the benefits of having local Christians or those from nearby places, conducting the majority of the ministries. Whenever possible, we would like to see the local church take the lead in the ministries that we are involved in.

We also arrange Discovery Tours, where a small group visit our overseas workers and assist them in their ministries. These trips are usually around 3 weeks long and it is a great cross-cultural experience for the teams who go.

MIDWEEK SERVICE

The hour-long Midweek service is held every second Wednesday morning at 10am. We have outstanding guest speakers and have a time of praise singing the old hymns. After the service we have a time of fellowship over a lovely morning tea. We welcome new people of any age.

MEDIA AND TECH

The Media and Tech team is a vital part of our church, serving primarily during our Sunday services. Our team operates the gear at the back of the auditorium to ensure that everyone can hear, see, and remain comfortable. Their ultimate goal is to provide a seamless experience where attendees never once think about the technical aspects.

The team is also responsible for live streaming services. Roles within the team include camera operators, directors who manage camera views for our at-home congregation, and sound operators who mix the worship and audio.

We warmly welcome new members and no prior experience is needed, as we provide training and coaching to ensure that everyone can contribute to this essential ministry. Join us in making a meaningful impact through the convergence of media and technology in our faith community.

CREATIVE MINISTRIES

We are a team of worshippers, whose primary aim is to facilitate and spark environments that encourage the Praise and Worship of our Creator and God. We love God and we love His church. Whether we are leading sung worship; ministering through a dance or drama; operating sound, lighting, video or graphics; creating visual art, songs or scripts; our aim is to serve God and His people through using the creative talents He has given us.

If this sounds like a team you would like to get involved with or find out more about, please get in touch. We would love to talk to you!

FIREWOOD

The Firewood Mission is a small team who process trees into firewood from Spring to Autumn, and then deliverS to needy families all over Christchurch and beyond during the winter. We come under the umbrella of Hope Presbyterian in Hornby but the team come from five churches and we work with several community organisations including: Etu Pasifika, Aviva, Teorahou, Anglicancare and other churches.

Want to support us? - Want to get involved? Just give us a call.

We operate most Saturday mornings from 9.00am—12.30pm and frequently during the week.  It’s entirely voluntary so if you can come, great. If you can’t, that’s okay.

SEWING BEE

Sewing Bee is a group set up to give members of the congregation a chance to build relationships through sewing together or learning to sew. We welcome all abilities and hope to teach those wanting to learn to sew by machine. We do projects for the church and will do some projects for ourselves.

We meet at the same time as the Friday night youth group as a convenience for parents. We operate in the youth base. Currently we meet to sew every 4 weeks.

GARDEN GROUP

We grow veggies in a spare piece of section on the church grounds. We have cultivated the plot, worked in compost, and planted veggie seeds and plants. Through careful watering and tending the crops, we have been able to harvest on a weekly basis. The aim is to be able to distribute to people in need.

There are many ways you could help; seedling raisers transplanted, hoers, weed pullers, harvest helpers, irrigators and people to help with other gardening tasks that may arise from time to time. Usually only small amounts of time are required. We usually harvest on a Tuesday morning at 9am during the school terms.

WHANAU DINNERS

First Sunday of the month, 5:00pm
Hope Presbyterian Hornby, 27 Amyes Road

As a church we recognise that in a cost of living crisis, feeding families can be hard. We want to provide a free meal and invite families to come along once a month and connect with each other and eat together. We’re aiming this at families who have school aged children - the time in our lives which is often most pressured! We will be eating in our church café and there will be a short talk from a Christian perspective tackling the tough stuff in our lives, for example; is there more to life than the daily grind, and why is it such a struggle?
